Valuable Jewelry--More than just sentimental...

So it's February, the month of LOVE, the month when thousands of men will get down on one knee and ask the love of their lives to be theirs forever. And a shiny, beautiful ring will be placed on her finger to signify this change in relationship status. I've been there...OK, so our engagement happened in the sweltering heat of August, but still...I've been there and I know what it's like to go from having an empty ring finger, to one that now holds a precious item that has more value to me than I could ever put a price tag on.

But the reality is, most of these items did have a price tag...and whether it's a ring that is worth $100 or $10000, it's valuable. Both sentimentally & monetarily.

At Smart Insurance, our job is to protect those things that are most dear to you...and for many couples, that includes at least one shiny, sparkly piece of jewelry. BUT...did you know that most of you may not be properly covered for the unthinkable...Mysterious Disappearance aka "YOU LOST YOUR RING?!?

Scheduling a piece of jewelry on your homeowner's policy typically costs mere pennies compared to the stress and heartache that might come should anything happen to your valuable jewelry. And this doesn't just apply to a diamond ring...anything can happen---maybe your valuable necklace is stolen at work, or your diamond studs are flushed down a toilet by a toddler, or an expensive watch you received as a college graduation present is left in the glove box of a rental boat on Table Rock Lake (that last one is completely hypothetical).

We want to make sure you're properly protecting your most valuable items. Here's a few things to consider when you're thinking about your jewelry coverage:

  • Your homeowners policy covers valuable items such as jewelry only up to set amounts. If the cost of replacing your jewelry exceeds that limit, you will want to purchase scheduled personal property coverage. You can check your policy or give us a call at 417-258-2541.

  • Do you need an appraisal? When your item was purchased, you likely received an appraisal or you may need to have an independent appraisal if the insurance company requires it. If you know exactly where it was purchased, contact your jeweler to see if they can provide a copy.

  • Is the value of your jewelry mainly sentimental? Is an item irreplaceable? If the answer to either of these questions is “yes,” you might consider foregoing insurance. But please, talk to us at 417-258-2541 before making that decision. That’s what we’re here for.

Of course, it’s important to store your jewelry securely when it’s not in use; a safe in your home or a safe-deposit box is best. We want your jewelry to be replaced if it’s lost or stolen, but we’d rather your sentimental and valuable pieces stay with you and your family for years to come.

Here’s hoping your Valentine’s Day is full of fun and romance. And if there’s no jewelry involved, well, there’s always next year!
